I caught part of The History Channel's "Dogfight" series earlier this week, the episode about bombers vs fighters. A portion was devoted to the recreation of an epic duel between Lt Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa's duel with three Zeros in an SBD. The show claimed he got three. When I looked him up in Barrett Tillman's US Navy Fighter Squadrons in World War II and in John Lundstrom's two books, I find that, according to Tillman, he was officially credited with with 10.25 victories as a member of VS-5 and VF-10 (7.25 in the F4F). Lundstrom in The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign gives him one victory through June 1942 and 7.25 Aug - Nov 1942, for a total of 8.25 as a member of VF-10. Lundstrom in The First Team recounts an engagement between eight SBDs of VS-5 and Zeros of Zuikaku on 8 May 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea where the US lost four SBDs and claimed four Zeros, 'most to Vejtasa' but goes on to say that the IJN 'lost no fighters in this combat'. Did Vejtasa ever get any Zeros while flying an SBD, and, if so, how many? The show was interesting, good computer graphics, and the Vejtasa episode featured a modern USMC fighter combat instructor and Vejtasa commenting on the battle. 如果这事是真实的话,那么只能得出两个结论:一是机师上个N人,二是SBD比想像中还要皮实! |
